Pinot Grigio is the common Italian name for the French variety Pinot Gris. It is thought to have originated from a mutation of Pinot Noir in Burgundy during the 14th century. It migrated to Alsace and later to Italy. Pinot Grigio arrived in Australia in 1832 as Pineau Gris from Burgundy, France. Include in the James Busby collection it had to wait 150 years before becoming popular with wine drinkers looking for something new. Today it is one of the most popular white wines enjoyed for its refreshing flavours and zesty acidity.

The wine is well balanced between fruitiness and acidity. The flavour is distinctive, complex crisp and lively. Crisp green apple and pear give it a nice crunchy texture.
Pinot Grigio has an easy to please flexibility when it comes to pairing with food. The forward fruit characters are flavoursome but a not too weighty palate means that it comfortably soaks up a range of cuisines. It becomes a wine that you could drink before a meal and during a meal, particularly lunch. If you’re searing some seafood or tossing a Thai beef salad together, Pinot Grigio would be the perfect match.

Dusty mineral aromas, more reserved and not over fruity, while the palate is tight and crisp, dry and lean, with good fruit and flavour but not too shrill or sweet. A good wine that is true to Grigio style. Very drinkable and leaves the mouth refreshed. Drink: 2018-2021
Bright and lively with citrus and lemongrass nuances. Medium flavour intensity. Clean, youthful and bright.

The Hunter Valley is known for its quality semillons and shirazes, sometimes for its verdelhos, but very rarely for its pinot grigios. There are exceptions to every wine rule, however, and industry veteran David Hook has produced a very good deal here. Made in the Italian grigio style — fresh, crisp and uncomplicated — this is a result of low cropping, often the key to success with the grape variety. Best enjoyed well chilled with fish and chips, or a dozen freshly shucked oysters.
An evolved, medium to full straw-yellow hue, with a similarly advanced bouquet of chopped herbs. Chopped parsley. There is a hint of greenness throughout the wine. The finish is fairly clean, dry and balanced. There could be a little barrel-fermented wine in the mix.
Straw-coloured. Plenty of fruit up-front. Stonefruit, sweet pear, green apple. It peters out through the finish but the fruity-refreshment-factor is pretty decent.
A hunter valley winemaker down to his bootstraps, David Hook still finds time to pursue his passion for Italian varietals. He’s been a Pinot Grigio devotee for more than two decades, this finely-tuned apple-pear flavoured effort revealing a deft hand showcasing the variety’s inherent characters.
