2020 Autumn Newsletter

13.03.2020

Seasonal conditions for the 2019-2020 growing season were perhaps the most challenging we have faced.

To say it was challenging was probably an underestimate, but we're relieved 2020 vintage is finished and pleased with the results.
We're in the fortunate position of owning our own vineyards and were able to make the quick decision to pick early, and that also meant that we were able to get fruit into the winery before the smoke blanket that swamped so many took hold. While crops were significantly lower than usual due to the drought, we're happy with the quality and look forward to getting these 2020 wines in bottle for you soon. We have had good rain in the last few weeks. The dams are full and the vineyard seems to have bounced back from the dry conditions. The resilience of grape vines never fails to amaze us. So we are looking at much improved conditions for next season.

Autumn Selection - Vintage Club Packs

Autumn is with us again, so it time to dispatch your Vintage Club Pack. This Autumn selection features wines from the excellent 2018 vintage. The wines reflect the near perfect growing conditions experienced in all ares from which we receive fruit.

The 2018 Orange Barbera is a new wine for us, a bright and slightly lighter style. Pale confident purple in colour with spiced plums and a swath of fresh cherry fruit and dried herbs. The medium bodied palate has just enough weight to carry the wines clean acidity. A great everyday red wine for all occasions , even slightly cooled for a warm Autumn day lunch.

Hilltops continues  as a hotspot for emerging quality Nebbiolo wines in Australia. Our 2018 Central Ranges Nebbiolo is made from grapes grown at the Spring Creek Road Vineyard,  just outside the small town of Wombat. The inspiration for this wine comes from the modern Langhe Nebbiolos of Italy. Fresh fruit driven eminently  enjoyable as young wines, but still with the great varietal structure fine tannins and fresh acidity. The wine has a bouquet of fresh cherry, the palate is light but with good intensity of flavour finishing with soft tannins, gentle but plentiful.

The 2018 Central Ranges Sangiovese is a blend from two vineyards, one located on the west slopes of Mount Canobolas the other just outside Young. Both vineyards are planted to the new Italian VCR and Matt clones. This wine was recently perfectly reviewed by Nick Butler in the Real Review "This is super spicy showing aniseed, charry oak, thyme and cinnamon - dark cherries lurking. A lean and sour cherry-driven palate, some coffee bean bitterness (in a good way). An early drinking style that's best served with food." 89/100 *** Recommended. Perfect for your Isolation pasta and sauce dinner.

2018 Westcourt Lane Cabernet Sauvignon from old unirrigated vines grown at Mudgee, a district renowned for its Cabernet’s. This wine has ripe fruit and a rich full bodied palate, an ideal accompaniment to hearty winter casseroles.

The grapes for the 2019 shiraz are from our low yielding Pothana vineyard, over twenty years of age, which has red clay loam with weathered limestone subsoil. Fermentation occurs in open vats, and the wine is matured in older oak barrels. Gorgeous aromas of raspberries and cherry pie. The wine has excellent intensity, in the red berry sphere, and is proudly medium-bodied. The tannins are fine and balanced.

The final wine in the pack is the 2018 Pinot Noir from our Old Vines at Pothana, The wine is bright cherry red in colour with a bouquet of raspberry and strawberry fruit with stalky fruit and earthy notes. The palate has a wonderful length of sweet fruit soft tannins and a fine acidity to create a great food friendly style to be enjoyed now or over the coming years.
