Autumn is here, although you wouldn’t think so considering the warm dry weather we have been experiencing in the Hunter of late. However, we are excited to remind you that with the change in seasons, your Platinum Catch pack order of 12 wines (six from our Old Vines range), is now due!
Listed below are the wines available for you as a valued member of our Platinum Catch Wine Club. Your May dozen includes no cartage meaning that this is a perfect time to order additional wines for your cellar without the additional $13 postage.
David Hook Wines aims to send out all Platinum Catch packs by 13th of May 2016 should we not receive your specific requests prior we will send out a winemaker’s selection for your enjoyment.
A collection of wines in our range are being offered as a pre-release exclusively for members from our outstanding 2014 vintage. Inlight of our stella 2014 vintage we now also have all of our 2014 Italian red varietal and blends available, these wines continue to grow in popularity with current releases being well received and awarded numerous medals in recent wine shows.
There has been much discussion of the 2014 Hunter Valley red wines, that they are the best since 1965. Personally, they are definitely some of the most attractive wines we have produced.
This is converted wine journalist Max Allen’s opinion of the 2014 reds following a recent tasting:
“Some of the Hunter reds from 2014 have already sold out, but fortunately others are just being released or else biding their time. As a group, they are typically medium to full-bodied (the region has indeed rediscovered its Mojo in this space), deeply perfumed and then profoundly layered on the palate, unfolding remarkable depth and purity of perfectly ripened fruit supported by firm but pliant tannins. Their balance is quite remarkable and their potential for longevity will be able to rival that of the 1965s”
Here are some tasting notes to assist and guide you in making the best selections for your palate:
Our 2014 Old Vines Shiraz has been recently reviewed by James Halliday scoring 96 points, proving to be an exceptional addition to your cellar.
For members only we have released the 2014 Molly Morgan Range Barbera, a new single vineyard release from the Hunter Valley, which won top gold at the AAWS show, narrowly beaten in the trophy tasting.
Over the last few years, I have been searching for grapes for our De Novo Rosso wine. Working with growers in the Hunter Valley and The Central Ranges to improve the quality of fruit by reducing yields, crop thinning as well as identifying premium sites as these vineyards mature. Although De Novo Rosso remains our main focus, we have selected several parcels of excellent fruit that we have kept separate and released as straight varietal wines.
Our 2014 Hunter Valley Sangiovese is fresh style with bright cherry fruit, a clean medium weighted palate with delightful light tannins and acid on the finish. This wine was awarded Gold and Silver medals in the two wine shows that we recently entered.
One of the oldest and most widespread, distinctive, and distinguished varieties of Piedmont, Nebbiolo is responsible for some of the finest wines of Italy, light in colour, high in both acid as well as tannin and exhibit a haunting array of aromas including tar, leaf mould, dried cherries, violets and roses. These wines truly have the ability to express the subtleties of terroir. With Nebbiolo’s late ripening, vigorous nature and lending itself to be very fussy about soils, this varietal appears to have found a solid home in Australia and in particular the red volcanic soils of the NSW Hilltops region. Our 2014 Central Ranges Nebbiolo is from a vineyard, specifically just outside Young. Ultimately this is a bright fresh modern style that is widely enjoyable as a young wine.
Our 2014 Barbera, is Central Ranges grown, specifically on Mount Canobolis in Orange. The cool climate Barbera varietal, with its perfumed cherry aromas and bright acid, is one of our benchmark wines.
If you appreciate aged wines our 2008 Old Vines Semillon is drinking beautifully at the moment and you are going to have to find a cork screw to enjoy the 2000 Gorge Shiraz.
New in our white selection is our first Vermentino this variety is a native of Italy and widely planted on the islands of Sardinia and nearby Corsica. It is an aromatic variety producing wines that are fragrant, gently spicy and with natural texture. Our 2015 Central Ranges Vermentino wine is rich and full bodied style.
It’s back! “The Marvellous Mosto”, for those who prefer something cold, sweet, fresh and frizzante, the 2016 Mosto is perfect.
